John 8:48-58  Jesus said “ Before Abraham was, ‘I AM’ ”

GIVE GOD TIME

Prayer and Praise

Jesus said, “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” Matthew 26:40, so we start our journey of giving God time to work in us, by praying along with this hymn…  “The Lord’s Prayer” sung by Cliff Richard, with choir …

A WORD IN YOUR EAR

John 8:48-58  Jesus said “ Before Abraham was, ‘I AM’ ”

48 The Judeans answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying you are from Shomron (Samaria) and have a demon?”

48. Jesus said that the unforgivable sin was blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 12:32). Now what we have here is the religious leaders asking their Creator, if He was a demon-possessed Samaritan. (They hated Samaritans so much they would take an extra-long way around Samaria, as they were seen as offspring of Jews who married Gentiles. This was why even the twelve disciples were surprised when they saw Jesus talking to a Samaritan woman. That evangelism led to her faith.)

49 Yeshua replied, “Me? I have no demon. I am honoring my Father. But you dishonor me”.

49. This time they really had gone too far. Let us remember exactly who Yeshua the Messiah really is. He had humbled Himself to come down to earth to save us, and in the process, put up with extreme personal abuse. Here they were dishonoring the creator of all. All Jesus said in response to being asked if He was a demon-possessed Samaritan was, “Me?” (Literal Hebrew). This was the coolest of all responses possible under the circumstances. Jesus continued that whilst He was honouring the Father, they dishonoured Him.

50 “I am not seeking praise for myself. There is One who is seeking it, and he is the judge”.

50. God the Father wants due recognition to be given to Jesus by His creation – ie ‘Praise’. It is not Jesus who seeks it for Himself. (Most people who  Jesus healed were told to keep quiet about it.)

51 “Yes, indeed! I tell you that whoever obeys my teaching will never see death.”

51. Obeying Jesus leads to having eternal life.

52 “The Judeans said to him, “Now we know for sure that you have a demon! Avraham died, and so did the prophets; yet you say, ‘Whoever obeys my teaching will never taste death.’

53 Avraham avinu (our father Abraham) died; you aren’t greater than he, are you? And the prophets also died. Who do you think you are?”

52-53. There’s a famous saying… ‘When you’re in a hole, stop digging’. Now the religious leaders turn their initial nasty question created for effect, to start an argument, into a blatant blasphemous statement. Their excuse is that Jesus offered life to those who obeyed Him. They said, ‘Abraham died, but you claim to be able to stop people dying if they obey you, so you are claiming to be greater than Abraham – so you are demon-possessed. Who do you think you are?

Given that Jesus said He only said and did what the Father told Him to say and do, and which Jesus submitted to, filled with the Holy Spirit, and now these religious leaders are now saying that all that is being done by demon-possession, they really are blaspheming. (See also Mark 3:29 & Luke 12:10 for more on blasphemy.)

54 Yeshua answered, “If I praise myself, my praise counts for nothing. The One who is praising me is my Father, the very one about whom you keep saying, ‘He is our God.’

54. The fact that Jesus even graced them with an answer was more than they deserved, saying in effect that ‘the One who you claim is your Father, is the very One who is praising Me’.

55 “Now you have not known him, but I do know him; indeed, if I were to say that I don’t know him, I would be a liar like you! But I do know him, and I obey his word.

55. Obedience is what God wants.

56 “Avraham, (Abraham), your father, was glad that he would see my day; then he saw it and was overjoyed.”

56. Abraham was still ALIVE! He rejoiced when he saw the time for Jesus had arrived.

57 “Why, you’re not yet fifty years old,” the Judeans replied, “and you have seen Avraham?”

57. They understood the words but did not believe them.

58 Yeshua said to them, “Yes, indeed! Before Avraham came into being, I AM!”

58. Jesus was saying He was from eternity.

59 At this, they picked up stones to throw at him; but Yeshua was hidden and left the Temple grounds.

59. That was enough for a stoning. They understood exactly what Jesus was saying.

John 8:42-47 “Yeshua replied … I came out from God…”

GIVE GOD TIME

Prayer and Praise

Jesus said, “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” Matthew 26:40, so we start our journey of giving God time to work in us, by praying along with this hymn;- Glorious things of Thee are spoken…

A WORD IN YOUR EAR

John 8:42-47 “Yeshua replied … I came out from God…”

(Acknowledgements to the “The Complete Jewish Bible”.)

42 Yeshua replied to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me; because I came out from God; and now I have arrived here. I did not come on my own; he sent me.

v. 42. The gospel is an offense. Jesus speaks more and more clearly as the appointed time for His sacrifice approaches. Unlike the other gospels, John gives most of His book over to Jesus’ teaching down south in and around Jerusalem. After all, that was where the prophets were killed, imprisoned, or persecuted in other ways by fellow Jews, from whom wrong teaching emanated. God sent His Son, Yeshua, (Jesus), to be the Messiah. Jesus came from God His Father in heaven, who sent Him.

43 Why don’t you understand what I’m saying? Because you can’t bear to listen to my message.

v.43 Who is Jesus talking to? V.13 shows this is a continuation of a conversation Jesus was having with the Pharisees. They can’t accept Jesus’ teaching! Why? Jesus explains that next…

44 You belong to your father, Satan, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. From the start, he was a murderer, and he has never stood by the truth because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he is speaking in character; because he is a liar — indeed, the inventor of the lie!

v.44 That is because their father is Satan, who is a murderer and whose language is one he invented – called “lying”.

45 But as for me, because I tell the truth you don’t believe me.

v.45 When presented with the truth, the southern religious leaders hated it, as it showed up their lies. The Jews following Jesus were mostly from the northern parts.

46 Which one of you can show me where I’m wrong? If I’m telling the truth, why don’t you believe me?

v.46 Jesus challenged them to speak up and explain exactly what was wrong with what Jesus said or did.

47 Whoever belongs to God listens to what God says; the reason you don’t listen is that you don’t belong to God.”

v.47 People who obey God belong to Him. The reason why so many religious leaders are not obedient is that they don’t belong to Him.

‘Who is Jesus?’ Jesus said ‘I came from God’ John 8: 42

  • Today’s Verse…

Who is Jesus? ‘Who is Jesus?’ Jesus said ‘I came from God’ John 8: 42

  • Today’s Challenge

When you read this, does it challenge you? Read again v. 44 where Jesus tells us that the father of the murderer is Satan. The Pope and his minions had huge numbers of ‘Born Again’ Christians burned alive – many of them after torture. Thousands of others were put to the sword in France, like the Huguenots. Anglican Bishops and Archbishops had many hundreds of those baptised by believer’s baptism, drowned, who justified it by calling them heretics, nicknaming them ‘anabaptists’. (Just as Bible translators were also treated.) Moving on from murder to lying, Popes justify their position on something called “The forged decretals”, even since they were proven to have been forged documents. The word “church” is a term used very loosely. How long are we going to continue justifying and supporting organizations founded on adultery, murder, and lies? (Especially as Jesus said the father of murderers is Satan, and that lying is the language created by Satan.) At the end of the day, whose side are we on? Foundations are critical, as they reveal what is of God. When Luther realized, he said, “Here I stand. I can do no other”.

A WORD IN YOUR EAR.

30 Many people who heard him say these things trusted in him. 31 So Yeshua (Jesus), said to the Judeans who had trusted him,

“If you obey what I say, then you are really my talmidim, (disciples),

32 you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

33 They answered, “We are the seed of Avraham (Abraham), and have never been slaves to anyone; so what do you mean by saying,

‘You will be set free’?”

34 Yeshua (Jesus) answered them, “Yes, indeed! I tell you that everyone who practices sin is a slave of sin. 35 Now a slave does not remain with a family forever, but a son does remain with it forever. 36 So if the Son frees you, you will really be free! 37 I know you are the seed of Avraham (Abraham). Yet you are out to kill me, because what I am saying makes no headway in you. 38 I say what my Father has shown me; you do what your father has told you!”

39 They answered him, “Our father is Avraham (Abraham).”

Yeshua (Jesus) replied, “If you are children of Avraham (Abraham), then do the things Avraham (Abraham) did!  40 As it is, you are out to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Avraham (Abraham) did nothing like that! 41a You are doing the things your father does.”

41b “We’re not illegitimate children!” they said to him. “We have only one Father — God!” (C.J.B.)

John 8: 21-30. Dispute Over Who Jesus Is (B)

A WORD IN YOUR EAR.

John 8: 21-30. Dispute Over Who Jesus Is (B)

21 Again he told them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, but you will die in your sin — where I am going, you cannot come.”

22 The Judeans (Jerusalem Jews) said, “Is he going to commit suicide? Is that what he means when he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?”

The ‘Judeans’ were Jerusalem’s orthodox religious Jewish leaders. Translations simply translating the word as ‘Jews’, do not show the difference clearly enough.

23 Yeshua (Jesus), said to them, “You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world. 24 This is why I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not trust that I AM [who I say I am], you will die in your sins.”

This is the translation by the Messianic Jewish Rabbi David Stern – so I trust this translation over the Gentile church’s translation. This is far more specific about who Jesus is saying He is. It is because of the specific meaning, that the Judeans then replied with the following question…

25a At this, they said to him, “You? Who are you?”

25b Yeshua (Jesus) answered,

“Just what I’ve been telling you from the start. 26 There are many things I could say about you, and many judgments I could make. However, the One who sent me is true; so I say in the world only what I have heard from him.”

Jesus is holding off from judging them, for now, because His first coming to earth is to bring about reconciliation and He only says what His Father tells Him to. One day He will come for judgment and then He will speak to judge mankind.

27 They did not understand that he was talking to them about the Father.

28 So Yeshua (Jesus) said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I AM [who I say I am], and that of myself I do nothing, but say only what the Father has taught me. 29 Also, the One who sent me is still with me; he did not leave me to myself, because I always do what pleases him.”

30 Many people who heard him say these things trusted in him. (Complete Jewish Bible.)

They understood exactly what Jesus was saying…which is why it is so significant when John adds the next statement…

John 8: 12-20. Dispute Over Jesus’ Testimony (A)

12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

13 The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”

14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one.

16 But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true. 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”

19a Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”

19b “You do not know me or my Father,” Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”

20 He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come. (Complete Jewish Bible)
