A WORD IN YOUR EAR

 Luke 18:18-42 Total commitment

Luke 18:18-30 Total commitment required of disciples

18A ruler asked, “Good Master, what do I have to do to have eternal life?”

19Jesus said to him,

“Why do you call me good? No one is good except God. 20You know the commands. Do not commit adultery. Do not murder. Do not steal. Do not be a false witness. Value your father and mother”.

21He replied, “I have kept them from my youth”.

22When Jesus heard these things He said,

“But there is one thing that you have not done. Sell what you have, give your treasure to the poor and you will have a place in heaven tomorrow, and come and follow me”. 23When he heard this, he became full of sorrow as he was very, very rich. 24When Jesus saw how sorry the man was, He said, “It is very hard for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God. 25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God”.

26Those listening said, “In that case, who can ever be saved?”

27He said,

“What is impossible with men, is possible with God.”

28At this Peter said, “We have left everything and followed you.”

29So He replied,

“I tell you, that there isn’t anyone who has left home, parents, brothers, wife or children for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30who will not get back much more than they gave up in this life and then in the next world, eternal life.”

31-34 Jesus’ total commitment.

31Then He took the twelve and said to them,

“Listen, we are going to go up to Jerusalem so that everything written about by the prophets, 31will happen to the Son of man. 32He will be given to the Gentiles, who will laugh at Him, treat Him badly and will spit on Him. 33Whips that tear open flesh will be used on Him, and then they will kill Him, but He will return from the dead on the third day”.

34They didn’t understand what He meant as it was hidden from them, or anything He said to them.

35-42 Jesus’ compassion

35They were coming near to Jericho when they came across a blind man who was begging by the roadside. 36When he heard the noise of so many people he wanted to know what was going on. 37Someone told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by.

38Then he cried out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me”.

39The people at the front of the crowd told him off and to be quiet, but he shouted out even more loudly, “Son of David, have mercy on me”.

40Jesus stopped and commanded that they bring the man to him. When he had come close, He asked him,

41”What do you want me to do for you?”

He replied, “Lord, I want to receive my sight”.

41So, Jesus said,

“Receive your sight. Your faith has saved you”.

42Immediately he received his sight and so he followed Him, and gave all the glory to God and the people saw this and praised God.

A WORD IN YOUR EAR

Chapter 18:1-17 Having the right attitude

1-8 On not giving up…

He told a story to teach that men should always be praying, without giving up, 2saying, “In a city there was a judge who had no fear of God and couldn’t care about anyone. 3There was a widow in that city who came and said to him ‘Give me justice from the unjust’. 4And at first he wasn’t willing to do anything, but then thought, ‘I don’t fear God or care about anyone, 5but as she is disturbing me, I will give her justice, or she will never give me any peace’.” 6Then the Lord said, “Learn from what was said by the judger of the unjust man. 7Don’t you think that God will give justice to His chosen ones who He has great feeling for, who have been crying out for it day and night? 8I tell you that He will give them justice swiftly. But more, when the Son of man comes back, will He find anyone on the earth who still believes?”

9-14 Religiosity is the wrong attitude…

9He told this meaningful story who thought that they were good enough to save themselves and looked down on others.

10“Two men went up to the temple to pray. One was a religious leader and the other one was a tax collector. 11The religious leader stood up and talking to himself said, ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other humans, doing anything and everything to get money from people. I am not unjust, or sleep with married women, or act like this tax collector here. 12Two times a week religiously, I stop eating and I pay my ten percent religious tax on everything.’ 13But the tax collector standing at a distance would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his chest saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner.’ 14I tell you, when this man stepped down to go home he was forgiven and not the other one. Anyone who puffs himself up will be brought down but anyone who humbles himself will be lifted up”.

15-17 Humility is the right attitude…

15They brought babies for Him to touch, but the disciples told them off. 16But Jesus said to His disciples,

“Let the little boys and girls come to me. Don’t forbid them. The Kingdom of God belongs to those just like them. 17I am really saying this to you, whoever does not receive the Kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.

Luke 17:20–38 The Kingdom of God…and end times…

20The religious leaders demanded that Jesus tell them when the Kingdom of God would come. He replied,

“The Kingdom of God does not come visably, 21or by looking here and there, because the Kingdom of God is inside you”.

22Then He said to the disciples,

“The time will come when you will want to know the days of the Son of man, but you will not see it. 23Some will say, ‘It is here’, or ‘It is there’, but do not follow them. 24Just as the lightning shines from the place where it comes, to light up the whole sky, so the Son of man will come in His day.

25But first, He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26The days of the Son of man will be just like the days of Noah. 27They were eating and drinking and choosing a wife to marry or being given away for marriage right up until the time Noah entered the ark, then the flood came and destroyed them all. 28Or just like the days of Lot when they ate and drank, bought and sold, planted and built, 29and the same day that Lot left Sodom, it rained fire and sulphur from heaven and destroyed them all. 30It will be just like that when the Son of man appears as He truly is. 31When that day comes, if you are on your flat rooftop don’t go down to get anything from the house, or if you are in the field, don’t come back. 32Just remember Lot’s wife! 33Anyone trying to hang onto their own life will lose it, and whoever sacrifices it, will keep it. 34I tell you that there will be two on a couch, one will be taken and the other left. 35Two will be crushing grain together, and one will be taken and the other left. 36Two will be in a field, one will be taken and the other left”.

37So they asked, “Where Master?”

38He said,

“Where the body is, that is where the eagles get together”.

A WORD IN YOUR EAR

Luke 17:1-19 Discipleship

1-2 Sin brings death

Then Jesus said to the disciples,

“You cannot stop sin trying to tempt you, but death waits for the one who tries to make you sin. 2It would be better for that person if a huge stone were hung around his neck and he then dropped it into the sea instead of tempting one of these little ones to sin.

3-4 Forgiveness

3Watch yourselves! If your brother sins against you, tell him where he is wrong, and if he wants to turn around and put things right with you, wash the slate clean. 4Even if he sins against you seven times in a day, if he says, ‘I repent’, forgive him”.

5-6 Faith

5The special disciples said,

‘Lord, increase our faith’.

6The Lord said,

“If you had faith as small as a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this sycamore tree, ‘be uprooted and be planted in the sea’, and it would obey you.

7-10 Obedience

7If you had a servant ploughing or feeding the cattle, would you say to him when he comes in from the field, ‘Go and sit down and eat’? 8Wouldn’t you say, ‘Get the food ready for my meal and bring it to me. Then you can eat and drink.’ 9Do you think the servant is thanked for obeying commands? I don’t think so! 10In the same way, when all you have done is to obey commands, you say, ‘we are just servants doing our duty’.”

11-19 Only the Gentile social outcast returned to say “thank you.”

11As He went to Jerusalem He went through Samaria and Galilee. 12As He went into a village, ten lepers were waiting for him but at a distance. 13They cried out to Him,

“Jesus! Master! Have mercy on us”.

14When He saw them, He said,

“Go and show yourself to the priest”.

As they went, they were healed. 15When one of them saw that he was healed he went back and gave glory to God. 16He fell down on His face giving Him thanks and yet he was a Samaritan.

17Jesus said to him,

“But weren’t ten healed? Where are the other nine? 18Only this stranger has come back to give glory to God!”

19He said to him,

“Stand up and go on your way, your faith has made you whole.”

A WORD IN YOUR EAR

Luke 16: Money

Luke 16:1-12 Using unholy money wisely

He also said to His disciples,

“There was once a rich man who had a steward who was accused of wasting his money. 2He told him to come and see him, when he asked, ‘How come I have heard this about you? Show me what you have been up to, as you may not be in charge much longer’.

3The steward thought, ‘What shall I do? I am about to lose my job. I am not a labourer and I would be ashamed to beg. 4I know what I can do to find work after I lose this job’. 5So, he called in the farmers who owed his boss part of the harvest and asked them, ‘Tell me how much you owe’?

6The first said, ‘Two thousand two hundred litres of oil’.

So the steward said, ‘Quickly, sit down and change it to one thousand one hundred’.

7To the next one said, ‘And how much do you owe?’

And he replied, ‘Twenty-two thousand litres of wheat’.

So, the steward said, ‘Take this old bill and change it to twenty-one and a half.’

8The boss told his bad servant how clever he was.

The worldly wise show a worldly wisdom that is not shown by those who are children of the light. 9But listen,  make friends of those who love unholy money, so that when you die, they will be there in heaven to welcome you. 10Whoever can be trusted in the small things can be trusted in the big things. Whoever is not just in small things will not be just in big things. 11If you have not been faithful with unholy money, who will trust you with true riches? 12If you cannot be trusted with other people’s property, how do you expect to be given your own property?

Luke 16:13-15 Choose God or money

13No servant can work for two masters. He will love one and hate the other. He will be loyal to one and not the other. You cannot serve God and money”. 14Also the religious leaders, who loved money, heard Him say this, and so they tried to make Him lose His face before the people. 15Then He said, “You are the ones who try to make yourselves look good to everyone, but God knows your hearts. What you love, God hates.

16-18 Religious laws were COMPLETED, not abandoned, but laws about how we treat each other continues on…

16“The law and the prophets were valid up until John, but after that the Kingdom of God is preached, and everyone wants to enter into it. 17It is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for the smallest grammar mark of ‘The Law’ to be done away with. 18Whoever divorces his wife and marries another is an adulterer. Whoever marries the divorced woman also commits adultery.

19-31 Jesus’ parable of a millionaire and the pauper, Lazarus…

19There once was a rich man who dressed very expensively in the best purple clothes, and ate a lot of very rich food. 20There was a beggar named Lazarus who was carried to his gate, with sores all over his body. 21All he wanted was the food left over from the meal table. Even the dogs came to lick his sores.

22 When he died, angels took him to Abraham, but when the rich man died, he was buried. 23From his pain in hell he looked up and saw Abraham a long way away with Lazarus by his side, 24so he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus with wet fingers to cool my tongue, as I am in torment here’.

25Abraham said,  ‘Son, you remember that you had all the good things in life and Lazarus had the rotten things? Now he is comforted and you are in torment. 26Anyway, an impossible gap to cross has been fixed between us, so that no one can go from here to you or to come from where you are to us’.

27So he replied, ‘Then I beg you father, send Lazarus to my father’s house, 28as I have five brothers. He can tell them, so they don’t come to this place of torment.’

29Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the prophets. All they have to do is to hear what they had to say’.

30He replied, ‘No father Abraham, if someone returns from the dead, they will repent’.

31He answered him, ‘If they don’t pay attention to Moses and the prophets, they will not even listen if someone returns from the dead’.”

—-Summary;- 16-18 Religious laws have been completed

A WORD IN YOUR EAR

Luke 15 The Father-heart of God.

1-10 God’s heart for the lost.

After that the ‘tax collectors’ and the public who had given up trying to follow all the religious rules, who were called ‘sinners’, came close to hear Him speak, 2so the religious leaders criticised Him for spending time eating with ‘sinners’.

3Then He told a story with a hidden meaning.

4“What shepherd wouldn’t leave ninety-nine sheep to go looking for one that got lost, until he found it? 5And then having found it, wouldn’t he then happily carry it back on his shoulders? 6Then, as soon as he was home, wouldn’t he celebrate with his friends and relatives saying, ‘Be happy with me that I have found the sheep that got lost’? 7In the same way, those in heaven will rejoice more when one sinner turns his back on sin than over all the ninety-nine who didn’t need to. 8It’s also like a woman who lost one of her ten pieces of silver, who gets a light and looks for it until she finds it by cleaning the house from top to bottom. 9When she finds it, she invites her friends around so that they share her happiness that she found the silver piece she lost. 10In the same way, there is joy like that in heaven over one sinner that turns away from sin”.

11-32 The Prodigal son…

11And then He said to them,

“A man had two sons. 12The younger one said to his father,

‘Father, give me now what I’ll get when you die’.

And so he gave him his inheritance. 13Not much longer after that, he left home and went far away to another country, where he wasted his money on a playboy lifestyle. 14Just about the time when all his money had been spent, the land had a famine, so there was very little food left and he became very hungry. 15So he went and worked for a local man in that foreign country who told him to feed the pigs. 16He was still hungry even after eating the pigs food, and no-one even gave him anything to eat. 17After he had thought about his situation, he thought,

“How many of my father’s staff have more than enough food to eat, when I am going hungry? 18I will go back home and say to my father, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and you, 19and I am not good enough to be called your son, so just make me one of your workers”.

20So he got up and went back to his father, but as soon as his father saw him coming in the distance, his heart melted and he ran to his son, hugging him and greeting him with a kiss. 21The son said,

‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and you, and I am not good enough to be called your son.’

22But the father said to his staff,

‘Get my best clothes and give them to him. Put my ring on his finger and shoes on his feet. 23Kill the fat young cow for us to eat and be happy, 24as my dead son is actually alive. Having been lost, he has been found. So, they were very happy for him’.

25Just then the older brother came in from the fields and heard music and dancing, 26so he asked a servant what was going on.

27He replied,

‘your brother is here, and so your father is having a feast to celebrate his safe return.’ 28This made him so angry that he refused to go into the house, even after his father asked him to. 29Instead the brother said,

‘I worked hard for you for years, obeying everything you said. In all that time, you never even let me have a goat so I could invite my friends round for a meal, 30but as soon as this son of yours comes back after wasting your money on prostitutes, you give him the best fatted young cow we had’.

31The father said,

‘Son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32It is right that we should have a party now that your dead brother is alive, who was lost but has been found’.”
