A WORD IN YOUR EAR

Chapter 24:1-35 Jesus rises from the dead!

Chapter 24:1-12  Jesus is risen!

Now they got up just as the first light of day came up, as soon as the Sabbath was over, the first day of the week, and they went back to the place where He was buried, with the spices and oils which they had prepared. 2But when they got there, the huge round stone that sealed the tomb was rolled back. 3They went inside but couldn’t find the body of Jesus, the Lord.

4Well, they didn’t know what to do. Just then they noticed two “men” with light shining through their clothes, 5and they were so afraid that they fell down with their faces to the ground, before them.

Then the “men” said,

“Why are you looking here for the living, where only the dead are put?! 6He is not here! HE IS RISEN! Do you remember how He spoke to you when He was in Galilee, 7saying ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and rise up again on the third day’?”

8Then they did remember His words, 9and went back from the tomb to tell all His other followers. 10The women were, Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and some others, who saw all this and they told the apostles, 11who refused to believe them as they sounded like fairy tales. 12Then Peter got up and ran to the tomb, to see for himself, and saw the clothes used for the dead body just left lying there. He left not knowing what to think, about what he had just seen.

Luke 24:13-35 Jesus appears on the road to Emmaus

13That day two of them went to the village of Emmaus, about twelve kilometres (or seven and a half miles), away. 14They were talking about what had happened, 15and during the conversation, Jesus joined them, 16but they didn’t know it was Him, as He kept their eyes from recognising Him.

17He asked them,

“What kind of conversation is this, that as you keep each other company, you are so sad?!”

18Cleopas replied “You must be the only person in Jerusalem who doesn’t know what happened in the last few days.”

19So He said,

“What things?”

20 They replied

“We’re talking about Jesus of Nazareth. A prophet who could do anything! And He spoke so powerfully before God to everyone. 21The religious leaders ordered his death and handed him over to be crucified and it’s now been three days since all this happened.

22Early today, some of the women who were with us, went to His tomb, 23but couldn’t find the body and told us they had seen a vision of angels, who said that He was alive. 24Some of our group went to the tomb to see for ourselves, and saw that it was just as the women had said, and so they didn’t see Him either”.

25Then He spoke to them;

“You talk in your ignorance and are slow to believe what you were told would happen, by the prophets. 26Shouldn’t Christ have suffered and then entered into His glory?”

27So, beginning at Moses and going through all the prophets, He explained everything about Himself in Scripture. 28When they came to the village where they were going to, He pretended He had further to go, 29but they begged Him not to, saying

“Stay with us, as it’s really late now”.

So He did.

30As they sat down to eat, He took the bread, gave God thanks and gave it to them. 31Well, suddenly they realised who it was, but suddenly He was gone. 32They were so excited saying,

“Didn’t our hearts warm when He spoke to us and explained everything to us from the Scriptures?”

33They got up almost immediately and went all the way back to Jerusalem, to see the disciples. 34They said,

“The Lord is back from the dead. He really is…and Simon saw Him.”

35They told them everything He did, and said they only realised who it was when He gave thanks for the food.

Prayer, Praise and Worship

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.

Prayer suggestions;-

  1. The world. (ie ‘For those in authority.’)
  2. The ‘suffering church.’ https://barnabasfund.org/nz/pray/daily-prayer/#previous-dates
  3. Your own situation. (Suggest ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’.)

Up from the grave He Arose | Voice of Eden (VOE) | INDIA

Low in the grave He lay

Jesus my Savior!

Waiting the coming day

Jesus my Lord!

Up from the grave He arose

With a mighty triumph o’er His foes

He arose a Victor from the dark domain

And He lives forever with His saints to reign

He arose! (He arose)

He arose! (He arose)

Hallelujah! Christ arose!

Vainly they watch His bed

Jesus, my Savior!

Vainly they seal the dead

Jesus my Lord!

Up from the grave He arose

With a mighty triumph o’er His foes

He arose a Victor from the dark domain

And He lives forever with His saints to reign

He arose! (He arose)

He arose! (He arose)

Hallelujah! Christ arose!

Death cannot keep it’s prey

Jesus, my Savior!

He tore the bars away

Jesus my Lord!

Up from the grave He arose

With a mighty triumph o’er His foes

He arose a Victor from the dark domain

And He lives forever with His saints to reign

He arose! (He arose)

He arose! (He arose)

Hallelujah! Christ arose!
