John 14:1-14. “Jesus said, ‘I AM the Way and the Truth and the Life’…”

GIVE GOD TIME

Prayer and Praise

Jesus said, “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” Matthew 26:40, so we start our journey of giving God time to work in us, by praying along with this hymn:-

Holy Holy Holy

A WORD IN YOUR EAR

John 14:1-14 “Jesus said, ‘I AM the Way, the Truth and the Life’ ”

This conversation follows on from chapter 13’s last Passover meal which they had just finished eating, showing that the chapter divisions divided what was one event. Jesus had just told Peter that he would disown Him even before the first sound of the morning cockerel crowed.

1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.

Believing in God needed to be followed up by believing in the Son of God.

2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the Way to the place where I am going.

Jesus is preparing an eternal home for God’s family. Jesus had already set the disciples on course to that destination – without them even realising it. So now that Thomas questions Jesus about how to know the way to where He is going, results in one of the most famous verses in the Bible… ‘I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, no one comes to the Father except through Me.’

5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?

6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.

Jesus is talking about us spending eternity with Him. Knowing Jesus is all they need, in order to find their way to join Him later. They will be automatically taken to Him later.

8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.

9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.

11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me, or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.

12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.’

—Summary

Jesus had promised the Holy Spirit. He had been repeating constantly that they would not be left alone as He would be sending the Holy Spirit to replace Him on earth. Later, they would remember that.

  • Today’s Verse…

Who is Jesus?  John 14:6

Jesus said, ‘I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me’.

  • Today’s Challenge

Jesus comforted His disciples – whilst knowing He will soon be killed.

He taught; v.11 “Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.”

Jesus IS the Way to the Father. Do you believe in Jesus?

Prayer and Worship

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.

Prayer suggestions;-

  1. The world. (ie ‘For those in authority.’)
  2. The ‘suffering church.’ https://barnabasfund.org/nz/pray/daily-prayer/#previous-dates
  3. Your own situation. (Suggest ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’.)

Second reading. John 14:1-14. (Complete Jewish Bible)

1 “Don’t let yourselves be disturbed. Trust in God and trust in me.

2 In my Father’s house are many places to live. If there weren’t, I would have told you; because I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3 Since I am going and preparing a place for you, I will return to take you with me; so that where I am, you may be also. 4 Furthermore, you know where I’m going; and you know the way there.”

5 T’oma, (Thomas), said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you’re going; so how can we know the way?”

6 Yeshua (Jesus) said, “I AM the Way — and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except through me.

7 Because you have known me, you will also know my Father; from now on, you do know him — in fact, you have seen him.”

8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it will be enough for us.”

9 Yeshua, (Jesus), replied to him, “Have I been with you so long without your knowing me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am united with the Father, and the Father united with me? What I am telling you, I am not saying on my own initiative; the Father living in me is doing his own works. 11 Trust me, that I am united with the Father, and the Father united with me. But if you can’t, then trust because of the works themselves. 12 Yes, indeed! I tell you that whoever trusts in me will also do the works I do! Indeed, he will do greater ones, because I am going to the Father. 13 In fact, whatever you ask for in my name, I will do; so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me for something in my name, I will do it.
