John 1:6-13 John’s 1st witness about who Jesus is

  • Prayer and Praise.

Jesus said, “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” Matthew 26:40, so we start our journey of giving God time to work in us, by praying this hymn…

  • A Word in your ear.

John 1:6-13; John’s first witness about who Jesus is…

6 There was a man sent from God whose name was Yochanan (John).

Being sent by God meant that John (the Baptist), was a messenger.

7 He came to be a testimony, to bear witness concerning the light; so that through him, everyone might put his trust in God and be faithful to him.

John came with the seal of God to be the witness to the Light and about who the Light was. The Light was a Person – and it was God. All were called to be faithful to Him.

8 He himself was not that light; no, he came to bear witness concerning the light.

John was not the Light but a witness about who He was. Jesus told His disciples that John was an ‘Elijah’ figure to point people to the actual Person that we must put our trust in. John calls this Person, the ‘Light’.

9 This was the true light, which gives light to everyone entering the world.

The ‘Light’ is the only source of light for those entering the world.

10 He was in the world — the world came to be through him — yet the world did not know him.

The Light is a Person. He created the world, which didn’t know who He was when He came.

11 He came to his own homeland, yet his own people did not receive him.

When He came, He chose to come to those who He called His own, but they rejected Him, (and even killed Him.)

12 But to as many as did receive him, to those who put their trust in his person and power, he gave the right to become children of God,

Although most rejected Him, there were some who did put their trust in Him, and so to them, they were brought into His family. That is how people could join.

13 not because of bloodline, physical impulse or human intention, but because of God. (Complete Jewish Bible.)

Summary:-

John the Baptist is the witness who testifies who Jesus is. He heard God the Father confirm Jesus and saw the Holy Spirit come in the form of a Dove on Jesus at the same time.

And all that was not because of ancestry, – but simply because God allowed any and all to join who put their trust in Him. God’s family is a spiritual one due to God’s grace.

  • Worship and Prayer.

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts,

as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

forever; Amen.

  • Verse for the day.

Who is Jesus? John 1:9 ‘This was the true light, which gives light to everyone entering the world’.

  • A challenge to think about… John 1:12.

“But to as many as did receive him, to those who put their trust in his person and power, he gave the right to become children of God…”

Have you ever put your trust in the person who is the reason why we exist, and been given the right to become a child of God?
