Prayer and Praise
Jesus said, “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” Matthew 26:40.
So we start our journey of giving God time to work in us, by praying along with this hymn…
IN CHRIST ALONE
John 16:1-16 Jesus said that the Holy Spirit is the vicar of Christ on earth
- Jesus gives fair warning. There is a cost to serving Jesus.
16 1-4a “I’ve told you these things to prepare you for rough times ahead. They are going to throw you out of the meeting places. There will even come a time when anyone who kills you will think he’s doing God a favor. They will do these things because they never really understood the Father. I’ve told you these things so that when the time comes and they start in on you, you’ll be well-warned and ready for them.
- The Holy Spirit Will Come
4b-7 “I didn’t tell you this earlier because I was with you every day – but now I am on my way to the One who sent me. Not one of you has asked, ‘Where are you going?’ Instead, the longer I’ve talked, the sadder you’ve become. So let me say it again, this truth: It’s better for you that I leave. If I don’t leave, the Friend won’t come. But if I go, I’ll send him to you.
The word ‘vicar’ comes from the Latin word ‘vicarious’. It means “in the place of”. Jesus says “If I don’t leave, the Friend won’t come. But if I go, I’ll send him to you.” So we see the Holy Spirit replaces Jesus on the earth. Using theological language, that statement would be that the Holy Spirit is the vicar of Christ on earth, because that is all the word ‘vicar’ means, as it comes from the Latin word, ‘vicarious’. The second title of the pope is ‘The vicar of Christ on earth’, meaning, ‘In the place of Christ on earth.’ So who is speaking the truth, Jesus or the pope?
Collins Dictionary’s definition of the “vicar of Christ on earth” is this;-
8-11 “When he comes, he’ll expose the error of the godless world’s view of sin, righteousness, and judgment: He’ll show them that their refusal to believe in me is their basic sin; that righteousness comes from above, where I am with the Father, out of their sight and control; that judgment takes place as the ruler of this godless world is brought to trial and convicted.
Now that Jesus had become man, He could only be in one place at one time. The Holy Spirit will be with all disciples everywhere all at the same time.
12-15 “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t handle them now. But when the Friend (the Holy Spirit), comes, the Spirit of the Truth, he will take you by the hand and guide you into all the truth there is. He won’t draw attention to Himself but will make sense out of what is about to happen and, indeed, out of all that I have done and said. He will honor me; he will take from me and deliver it to you. Everything the Father has is also mine. That is why I’ve said, ‘He takes from me and delivers to you.’
The only righteousness that counts with God is the righteousness that He gives us. Our own righteousness is as filthy rags. Is. 64:6-7 & Philippians 3:9.
The Holy Spirit gives us what belongs to Jesus, which all comes from His Father in heaven.
16 “In a day or so you’re not going to see me, but then in another day or so you will see me.”
Jesus knows He is about to be crucified and that He will rise again. They will see Him die and after 3 days they will see His resurrected body on and off until He returns to His Father.
John 16:2-3 “They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or Me”.
‘Who is Jesus?’
John 16:15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.
Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).
Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.
1 “All this I have told you so that you will not fall away.
2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. 4a I have told you this so that when their time comes, you will remember that I warned you about them.
4b I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, 5 but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things.
7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin, because people do not believe in me;
10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.
15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”
