John 18:28-40 Jesus Before Pilate

The hymn can now be found along with the prayer, praise, and worship section at the end…

John 18:28-40 Jesus Before Pilate

28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.

By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.

29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”

Jewish leaders

30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”

31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”

Jewish leaders

“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected.

32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.

33 Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”

35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”

36 Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”

37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.

Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”

38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this, he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.

39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”

Jewish crowd

40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.

For this week’s summary, picture the scene…

Let your mind play the different parts.

Imagine YOU are in the crowd, along with Peter – and the narrator – John…

  • Today’s Challenge

Would you have denied knowing Jesus and hung your head in shame with Peter and snuck out the back way.

Today’s Verse… ‘Who is Jesus?’ John 18:36…

John 18:36 Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11). Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.

Prayer suggestions;-

  1. The world. (ie ‘For those in authority.’)
  2. The ‘suffering church.’
  3. Your own situation. (Suggest ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’.)

Praise and Worship

2nd reading of John 18:28-40  Complete Jewish Bible

28. They led Yeshua (Jesus) from Kayafa (Caiaphas) to the governor’s headquarters. By now it was early morning. They did not enter the headquarters building because they didn’t want to become ritually defiled and thus unable to eat the Pesach (Passover) meal.

29. So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What charge are you bringing against this man?”

Jewish leaders.

30. They answered, “If he hadn’t done something wrong, we wouldn’t have brought him to you.”

Pilate to the leaders…

31. Pilate said to them, “You take him and judge him according to your own law.”

Jewish leaders.

The Judeans replied, “We don’t have the legal power to put anyone to death.”

32. This was so that what Yeshua (Jesus) had said, about how he was going to die, might be fulfilled.

33 So Pilate went back into the headquarters, called Yeshua (Jesus), and said to him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

34 Yeshua (Jesus) answered, “Are you asking this on your own, or have other people told you about me?”

35 Pilate replied, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and head cohanim (priests) have handed you over to me; what have you done?”

36 Yeshua (Jesus) answered, “My kingship does not derive its authority from this world’s order of things. If it did, my men would have fought to keep me from being arrested by the Judeans. But my kingship does not come from here.”

37 “So then,” Pilate said to him, “You are a king, after all.”

Yeshua (Jesus) answered, “You say I am a king. The reason I have been born, the reason I have come into the world, is to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to me.”

38 Pilate asked him, “What is truth?”

Pilate to the crowd…

Having said this, Pilate went outside again to the Judeans and told them, “I don’t find any case against him. 39. However, you have a custom that at Passover I set one prisoner free. Do you want me to set free for you the ‘king of the Jews’?”

Jewish crowd.

40 But they yelled back, “No, not this man but Bar-Abba! (Barabbas)” (Bar-Abba was a revolutionary.)
