A WORD IN YOUR EAR

John 19:16b-27 Jesus is crucified

v. 16b Jesus was taken away, 17 and he carried his cross to a place known as “The Skull.” In Aramaic this place is called “Golgotha.”

18 There Jesus was nailed to the cross, and on each side of him a man was also nailed to a cross.

The notice of the crime…

19 Pilate ordered the charge against Jesus to be written on a board and put above the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.”

20 The words were written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.

The place where Jesus was taken wasn’t far from the city, and many of the people read the charge against him.

The Jews object to the charge…

21 So the chief priests went to Pilate and said, “Why did you write that he is King of the Jews? You should have written, ‘He claimed to be King of the Jews.’ ”

22 But Pilate told them, “What is written will not be changed!”

The soldiers

23 After the soldiers had nailed Jesus to the cross, they divided up his clothes into four parts, one for each of them. But his outer garment was made from a single piece of cloth, and it did not have any seams.

24  The soldiers said to each other, “Let’s not rip it apart. We will gamble to see who gets it.” This happened so the Scriptures would come true, which say,

“They divided up my clothes and gambled for my garments.” Psalm 22:19(18)

The soldiers then did what they had decided.

Jesus thinks of others

25 Jesus’ mother stood beside his cross with her sister and Mary the wife of Clopas. Mary Magdalene was standing there too.

26 When Jesus saw his mother and his favorite disciple with her, he said to his mother, “This man is now your son.”

27 Then he said to the disciple, “She is now your mother.”

From then on, that disciple took her into his own home.

Prayer, Praise & Worship

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.

Prayer suggestions;-

  1. The world. (ie ‘For those in authority.’)
  2. The ‘suffering church.’ https://barnabasfund.org/nz/pray/daily-prayer/#previous-dates
  3. Your own situation. (Suggest ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’.)

Jesus said, “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” Matthew 26:40.

2nd reading; John 19:16b-27 Jesus is crucified (Complete Jewish Bible)

16 Then Pilate handed Yeshua (Jesus) over to them to have him put to death on the stake.

So they took charge of Yeshua (Jesus).

17 Carrying the stake himself he went out to the place called Skull (in Aramaic, Gulgolta (Golgotha). 18 There they nailed him to the stake along with two others, one on either side, with Yeshua in the middle.

The notice of the crime…

19 Pilate also had a notice written and posted on the stake; it read,

YESHUA (Jesus) FROM NATZERET (Nazareth)

THE KING OF THE JEWS

20 Many of the Judeans read this notice because the place where Yeshua (Jesus) was put on the stake was close to the city; and it had been written in Hebrew, in Latin and in Greek.

The Jews object to the charge…

21 The Judeans’ head cohanim (priest) therefore said to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but ‘He said, “I am King of the Jews.”’”

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

The soldiers

23 When the soldiers had nailed Yeshua (Jesus) to the stake, they took his clothes and divided them into four shares, a share for each soldier, with the under-robe left over. Now the under-robe was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom;

24 so they said to one another, “We shouldn’t tear it in pieces; let’s draw for it.” This happened in order to fulfill the words from the Tanakh, (Scriptures)

“They divided my clothes among themselves and gambled for my robe.” Psalm 22:19

This is why the soldiers did these things.

Jesus thinks of others

25 Nearby Yeshua’s (Jesus) execution stake stood his mother, his mother’s sister Miryam (Mary) the wife of K’lofah (Clopas), and Miryam (Mary) from Magdala (Magdalene).

26 When Yeshua (Jesus) saw his mother and the talmid (disciple) whom he loved standing there, he said to his mother, “Mother, this is your son.”

27 Then he said to the talmid (disciple), “This is your mother.” And from that time on, the talmid (disciple) took her into his own home.
