A WORD IN YOUR EAR

John 19:28-42 Jesus dies and is buried… Complete Jewish Bible

(Also in Matthew 27.45-56; Mark 15.33-41; Luke 23.44-49)

 The Death of Jesus

28 After this, knowing that all things had accomplished their purpose, Yeshua (Jesus), in order to fulfill the words of the Tanakh (Scriptures), said, “I’m thirsty.”

29 A jar full of cheap sour wine was there; so they soaked a sponge in the wine, coated it with oregano leaves and held it up to his mouth.

30 After Yeshua (Jesus) had taken the wine, he said, “It is accomplished!” And, letting his head droop, he delivered up his spirit.

A Spear Is Stuck in Jesus’ Side

31 It was Preparation Day, and the Judeans did not want the bodies to remain on the stake on Shabbat (Sabbath), since it was an especially important Shabbat (Sabbath). So they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies removed.

32 The soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man who had been put on a stake beside Yeshua (Jesus), then the legs of the other one; 33 but when they got to Yeshua (Jesus) and saw that he was already dead, they didn’t break his legs.

34 However, one of the soldiers stabbed his side with a spear, and at once blood and water flowed out.

35 The man who saw it has testified about it, and his testimony is true. And he knows that he tells the truth, so you too can trust.

36 For these things happened in order to fulfill this passage of the Tanakh (Scriptures):

“Not one of his bones will be broken.”

37 And again, another passage says,

“They will look at him whom they have pierced.”

Jesus Is Buried

(Matthew 27.57-61; Mark 15.42-47; Luke 23.50-56)

38 After this, Yosef of Ramatayim, (Joseph from Arimathea), who was a talmid (disciple) of Yeshua (Jesus), but a secret one out of fear of the Judeans, asked Pilate if he could have Yeshua’s (Jesus) body. Pilate gave his consent, so Yosef (Joseph) came and took the body away.

39 Also Nakdimon (Nicodemus), who at first had gone to see Yeshua (Jesus) by night, came with some seventy pounds of spices — a mixture of myrrh and aloes.

40 They took Yeshua’s (Jesus’) body and wrapped it up in linen sheets with the spices, in keeping with Judean burial practice.

41 In the vicinity of where he had been executed was a garden, and in the garden was a new tomb in which no one had ever been buried.

42 So, because it was Preparation Day for the Judeans, and because the tomb was close by, that is where they buried Yeshua (Jesus).

—-Summary

Everything was prophesied and happened just as Jesus said. There are no more excuses left to us.

Today’s Verse… Who is Jesus?

36 For these things happened in order to fulfill this passage of the Tanakh (Scriptures):

“Not one of his bones will be broken.”

37 And again, another passage says, “They will look at him whom they have pierced.”

Today’s Challenge…

35 The man who saw it has testified about it, and his testimony is true. And he knows that he tells the truth, so you too can trust.

The Jewish leader, Nicodemus, responded once he knew the truth. How have you responded?

39 Also Nakdimon (Nicodemus), who at first had gone to see Yeshua (Jesus) by night, came with some seventy pounds of spices — a mixture of myrrh and aloes.

Prayer, Praise and Worship

Jesus said, “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” Matthew 26:40.

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.

Prayer suggestions;-

  1. The world. (ie ‘For those in authority.’)
  2. The ‘suffering church.’ https://barnabasfund.org/nz/pray/daily-prayer/#previous-dates
  3. Your own situation. (Suggest ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’.)

Second Reading John 19:28-42 Jesus dies and is buried…

Contemporary English Version

 The Death of Jesus

(Matthew 27.45-56; Mark 15.33-41; Luke 23.44-49)

28  Jesus knew that he had now finished his work. And in order to make the Scriptures come true, he said, “I am thirsty!” 29 A jar of cheap wine was there. Someone then soaked a sponge with the wine and held it up to Jesus’ mouth on the stem of a hyssop plant.

30 After Jesus drank the wine, he said, “Everything is done!” He bowed his head and died.

A Spear Is Stuck in Jesus’ Side

31 The next day would be both a Sabbath and the Passover. It was a special day for the Jewish people, and they did not want the bodies to stay on the crosses during this day. So they asked Pilate to break the men’s legs and take their bodies down.

32 The soldiers first broke the legs of the other two men who were nailed there.

33 But when they came to Jesus, they saw he was already dead, and they did not break his legs.

34 One of the soldiers stuck his spear into Jesus’ side, and blood and water came out.

35 We know this is true, because it was told by someone who saw it happen. Now you can have faith too.

36  All this happened so that the Scriptures would come true, which say, “No bone of his body will be broken” 37  and “They will see the one in whose side they stuck a spear.”

Jesus Is Buried

(Matthew 27.57-61; Mark 15.42-47; Luke 23.50-56)

38 Joseph from Arimathea was one of Jesus’ disciples. He had kept it secret though because he was afraid of the Jewish leaders. But now he asked Pilate to let him have Jesus’ body. Pilate gave him permission, and Joseph took it down from the cross.

39  Nicodemus also came with about 30 kilograms of spices made from myrrh and aloes. This was the same Nicodemus who had visited Jesus one night.

40 The two men wrapped the body in a linen cloth, together with the spices, which was how the Jewish people buried their dead.

41 In the place where Jesus had been nailed to a cross, there was a garden with a tomb that had never been used.

42 The tomb was nearby, and since it was the time to prepare for the Sabbath, they were in a hurry to put Jesus’ body there.
