John 21: 20-25 Jesus knows the future…

GIVE GOD TIME

(Being ‘intentional’ with God.)

The hymn is under worship at the end now.

A WORD IN YOUR EAR

John 21: 20-25 Jesus knows the  future

(Complete Jewish Bible)

20 Kefa, (Peter), turned and saw the talmid (disciple) Yeshua (Jesus) especially loved, following behind, the one who had leaned against him at the supper and had asked, “Who is the one who is betraying you?”

This ‘disciple Jesus loved’ was John.

21 On seeing him, Kefa (Peter), said to Yeshua, (Jesus),Lord, what about him?”

Peter had just been told he would be martyred, and his reaction was to ask Jesus what John’s fate would be! (‘What about him?’ he said.) Peter knew John was the favourite. He wanted to know if John would get special treatment!

22 Yeshua (Jesus) said to him, “If I want him to stay on until I come, what is it to you? You, follow me!”

This answer is the same as saying, ‘mind your own business!’

23 Therefore the word spread among the brothers that ‘that’ talmid (disciple), would not die. However, Yeshua (Jesus), didn’t say he wouldn’t die, but simply, “If I want him to stay on until I come, what is it to you?

Jesus had simply used a figure of speech like; ‘that’s none of your business.’ But Jesus knew He was to ask John to look after Mary after He was crucified and with that job, the extra time needed to do that. But it also meant that at least one apostle lived to tell the tale that the Messiah expected was Jesus. We also benefitted as the book of Revelation is the vision Jesus gave to John while he was in prison on the island of Patmos.)

24 This one is the talmid (disciple), who is testifying about these things and who has recorded them. And we know that his testimony is true.

The author, (John), is saying that he wrote as an eyewitness.

25 But there are also many other things Yeshua (Jesus), did; and if they were all to be recorded, I don’t think the whole world could contain the books that would have to be written!

John had had to be very selective regarding the events he could fit into this Gospel, as there were just too many things to mention that Jesus did and taught! This is our God, the Servant King…

—-Summary

25 But there are also many other things Yeshua (Jesus), did; and if they were all to be recorded, I don’t think the whole world could contain the books that would have to be written!

  • Today’s Verse… Who is Jesus?

22 Yeshua (Jesus) said to him, “If I want him to stay on until I come, what is it to you?

You, follow me!”

a). Jesus knows the future.

b). Jesus is the One we must follow.

  • Today’s Challenge

22 Yeshua (Jesus) said to him, “If I want him to stay on until I come, what is it to you?

You, follow me!”

Jesus is the One we must follow. That means being OBEDIENT to Him.

Prayer, Praise and Worship

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.

Prayer suggestions;-

  1. The world. (ie ‘For those in authority.’)
  2. The ‘suffering church.’ https://barnabasfund.org/nz/pray/daily-prayer/#previous-dates
  3. Your own situation. (Suggest ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’.)

Pray along with this hymn… This is our God, the Servant King…

2nd reading John 21:20-25 Jesus reinstates Peter (JB Phillips)

Jesus knows the future…

20-21). Then Peter turned round and noticed the disciple whom Jesus loved following behind them. (He was the one who had his head on Jesus’ shoulder at supper and had asked, “Lord, who is the one who is going to betray you?”) So he said, “Yes, Lord, but what about him?”

22). “If it is my wish,” returned Jesus, “for him to stay until I come, is that your business, Peter? You must follow me.”

23a). This gave rise to the saying among the brothers that this disciple would not die. Yet, of course, Jesus did not say, “He will not die,”, but simply, “If it is my wish for him to stay until I come, is that your business?”

John’s purpose for writing…

23b). All the above was written by an eye-witness… 24-25 Now it is this same disciple who is hereby giving his testimony to these things and has written them down. We know that his witness is reliable. Of course, there are many other things which Jesus did, and I suppose that if each one were written down in detail, there would not be room in the whole world for all the books that would have to be written.

‘Breathe on me, Breath of God…’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5keJHZdWYM

  • Breathe on me, Breath of God,
    Fill me with life anew,
That I may love what Thou dost love,
And do what Thou wouldst do.
  • Breathe on me, Breath of God,
    Until my heart is pure,
Until with Thee I will one will,
    To do and to endure.
  • Breathe on me, Breath of God,
    Till I am wholly Thine,
Until this earthly part of me
    Glows with Thy fire divine.
  • Breathe on me, Breath of God,
    So shall I never die,
But live with Thee the perfect life
    Of Thine eternity.

This is our God, the Servant King…
