A WORD IN YOUR EAR

John 21:1-14 Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish (NIV)

21:1a Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee.

The ‘Sea of Galilee’ was also called ‘Lake Tiberias’, renamed by ‘Emperor Tiberias’ – after himself!  Dr. Luke was a true sea-faring doctor, taveling with Paul, and being widely traveled he knew that as the water was landlocked, it was a ‘lake’, and so the Romans got the word ‘lake’ right, but Luke wouldn’t accept the renaming of it by Tiberias, after himself, and so he called it Lake Galilee – which was the most accurate definition. To the local people who didn’t know any better, who lived by the Lake, it seemed like the sea! It had its own weather patterns, brought on by the mountains adjacent, introducing storms!

21:1b.It happened this way:

v.2 Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. (Thomas and Didymus both mean ‘Twin’).

3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

It was night and they were still all hanging out together with nothing to do – until Peter gave them an idea – to go fishing!

4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

They were going back to work – no longer expecting to see Jesus…

5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No,” they answered.

6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

Jesus had done this once before – and then they knew it was Jesus!

7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!”

That miracle announced who was on shore awaiting their arrival. The disciple who it says Jesus ‘agape-d’, was John.

As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.

Note: Peter couldn’t swim! (Remember Matthew 14:30!)

But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. 31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?)

Peter simply couldn’t wait to see Jesus again – so he jumped in anyway and ‘waded’ ashore.

8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.

(100 yards = about 90 meters.)

9 When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.

Jesus had ALREADY caught fish even when they couldn’t – and prepared breakfast for them, even knowing in advance exactly when they would be returning!

10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.”

It was a BBQ hosted by Jesus!

11 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many, the net was not torn.

12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.”

None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.

13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.

Jesus served them all breakfast!

14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

—-Summary

Jesus was preparing them for His permanent departure – but wanted them to witness that He had risen. That was real – and they would be changed by the experience – and take the news worldwide.

Prayer, Praise and Worship

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.

Prayer suggestions;-

  1. The world. (ie ‘For those in authority.’)
  2. The ‘suffering church.’ https://barnabasfund.org/nz/pray/daily-prayer/#previous-dates
  3. Your own situation. (Suggest ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’.)

2nd reading of John 21:1-14 Complete Jewish Bible

21 After this, Yeshua (Jesus) appeared again to the talmidim (disciples) at Lake Tiberias.

Here is how it happened: 2 Shim‘on Kefa (Simon Peter) and T’oma (his name means “twin”) were together with Natan’el (Nathaniel) from Kanah (Canaan) in the Galil (Galilee), the sons of Zavdai (Zebedee), and two other talmidim (disciples)

3 Shim‘on Kefa (Simon Peter) said, “I’m going fishing.” They said to him, “We’re coming with you.” They went and got into the boat, but that night they didn’t catch anything. 4 However, just as day was breaking, Yeshua (Jesus) stood on shore, but the talmidim (disciples) didn’t know it was he.

5 He said to them, “You don’t have any fish, do you?” “No,” they answered him. 6 He said to them, “Throw in your net to starboard and you will catch some.” So they threw in their net, and there were so many fish in it that they couldn’t haul it aboard. 7 The talmid (disciple) Yeshua (Jesus) loved said to Kefa (Peter), “It’s the Lord!” On hearing it was the Lord, Shim‘on Kefa (Simon Peter) threw on his coat, because he was stripped for work, and plunged into the lake;

8 but the other talmidim (disciples) followed in the boat, dragging the net full of fish; for they weren’t far from shore, only about a hundred yards.

9 When they stepped ashore, they saw a fire of burning coals with a fish on it, and some bread.

10 Yeshua (Jesus) said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.”

11 Shim‘on Kefa (Simon Peter) went up and dragged the net ashore. It was full of fish, 153 of them; but even with so many, the net wasn’t torn. 12 Yeshua (Jesus) said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the talmidim (Jesus) dared to ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.

13 Yeshua (Jesus) came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time Yeshua (Jesus) had appeared to the talmidim (disciples) after being raised from the dead.

Pray along with this hymn… ‘Breathe on me, Breath of God’ at this link…

  • Breathe on me, Breath of God,
    Fill me with life anew,
That I may love what Thou dost love,
And do what Thou wouldst do.
  • Breathe on me, Breath of God,
    Until my heart is pure,
Until with Thee I will one will,
    To do and to endure.
  • Breathe on me, Breath of God,
    Till I am wholly Thine,
Until this earthly part of me
    Glows with Thy fire divine.
  • Breathe on me, Breath of God,
    So shall I never die,
But live with Thee the perfect life
    Of Thine eternity.
