John 7:14-24 Foiling the plot

  • Prayer and Praise.

Jesus said, “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” Matthew 26:40, so we start our journey of giving God time to work in us, by praying the hymn GOD IS LOVE, LET HEAVEN ADORE HIM, at this link…

John 7:14-24 Foiling the plot

14 Not until the festival was half over did Yeshua (Jesus) go up to the Temple courts and begin to teach.

It was a 7-8 day-long feast. So halfway through meant 3-4 days after it started, so Jesus outmaneuvered the religious leader’s conspiracy, by teaching at the festival after he arrived late!

15 The Judeans (Jews from Judea), were surprised: “How does this man know so much without having studied?” they asked.

Those authorized to be teachers had not taught Jesus and acknowledged that by admitting not knowing where He got His learning from!

16 So Yeshua (Jesus) gave them an answer: “My teaching is not my own, it comes from the One who sent me.

Jesus knew what they were whispering to each other – and He gave glory to God.

17 If anyone wants to do his will, he will know whether my teaching is from God or I speak on my own.

Those seeking to know God’s will, come to realize that it is the same as the teaching of Jesus.

18 A person who speaks on his own is trying to win praise for himself; but a person who tries to win praise for the one who sent him is honest, there is nothing false about him.

A person speaking in order to honour another person is not trying to honour himself.

19 Didn’t Moshe (Moses) give you the Torah? (the ‘Law’?). Yet not one of you obeys the Torah! (the Law!). Why are you out to kill me?”

In the crowd were Jesus’ enemies. We know from His answer He was addressing the teachers of the law. He said that Moses brought the law from God which they themselves teach, but do not obey! Why are they breaking it by trying to kill Him?

20 “You have a demon!” the crowd answered. “Who’s out to kill you?”

The religious leaders went on the attack as their defence! They did it by accusing Jesus of having a demon for saying that they were conspiring to kill Him. Jesus had hit a raw nerve. He was not supposed to know!

21 Yeshua answered them, “I did one thing; and because of this, all of you are amazed.

The religious leaders were not believing in a God of miracles.

22 Moshe gave you b’rit-milah – (circumcision)— not that it came from Moshe (Moses), but from the Patriarchs — and you do a boy’s b’rit-milah (circumcision) on Shabbat (Sabbath)

They themselves circumcise infants 8 days old, on the Sabbath Day – which they got paid for. It was their form of work.

23 If a boy is circumcised on Shabbat (Sabbath) so that the Torah (law) of Moshe (Moses), will not be broken, why are you angry with me because I made a man’s whole body well on Shabbat? (Sabbath?). 24 Stop judging by surface appearances, and judge the right way!”

—- Summary

Jesus is saying, ‘In the same way, He too is doing the work of God by healing on the Sabbath, so why do they judge Him for doing the same thing? They don’t look at things spiritually when they judge. There is no light coming from them. The Sabbath was made to help man. Mankind was not created so there would be someone around to observe a Sabbath law!

Today’s Verse…

Who is Jesus?

‘The Judeans (Jerusalem’s Jewish leaders) were surprised: “How does this man know so much without having studied?” they asked. John 7:15

Today’s Challenge

Jesus only did and said what God wanted. Every time He did that, He faced opposition from the religious leaders. The cost of discipleship was constant. Jesus was a living sacrifice – and not only because He was the sacrifice who died for us. In Romans 12:1 we too are told to be a living sacrifice.

Prayer and Worship

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.

Prayer suggestions;-

  1. The world. (ie ‘For those in authority.’ Use the news!)
  2. The ‘suffering church.’
  3. Your own situation. (Suggest ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’.)
