John 7:53-8:11 – Setting a trap…

GIVE GOD TIME

Prayer and Praise

Jesus said, “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” Matthew 26:40, so we start our journey of giving God time to work in us, by praying the hymn Praise My Soul The King Of Heaven, at this link…

1 Praise, my soul, the King of heaven;

to his feet your tribute bring.

Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,

evermore his praises sing.

Alleluia, alleluia!

Praise the everlasting King!

2 Praise him for his grace and favor

to his people in distress.

Praise him, still the same as ever,

slow to chide, and swift to bless.

Alleluia, alleluia!

Glorious in his faithfulness!

 3 Fatherlike he tends and spares us;

well our feeble frame he knows.

In his hand he gently bears us,

rescues us from all our foes.

Alleluia, alleluia!

Widely yet his mercy flows!

4 Angels, help us to adore him;

you behold him face to face.

Sun and moon, bow down before him,

dwellers all in time and space.

Alleluia, alleluia!

Praise with us the God of grace!

A Word in your ear

John 7:53-8:11 The Jewish leaders set a murder trap…

John 7:53 Then they all left, each one to his own home.

John 8:1 But Yeshua (Jesus) went to the Mount of Olives.

2 At daybreak, he appeared again in the Temple Court, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.

3 The Torah-teachers (the teachers of the law) and the P’rushim, (the Pharisees), brought in a woman who had been caught committing adultery and made her stand in the center of the group.

4 Then they said to him, “Rabbi, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. 5 Now in our Torah, (Law) Moshe (Moses) commanded that such a woman be stoned to death.

What do you say about it?”

6 They said this to trap him, so that they might have grounds for bringing charges against him; but Yeshua (Jesus) bent down and began writing in the dust with his finger.

7 When they kept questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “One of you who is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”

8 Then he bent down and wrote in the dust again.

9 On hearing this, they began to leave, one by one, the older ones first, until he was left alone, with the woman still there.

10 Standing up, Yeshua (Jesus) said to her, “Where are they? Has no one condemned you?”

11 She said, “No one, sir.”

Yeshua said, “Neither do I condemn you. Now go, and don’t sin anymore.”

—-Summary

7:53–8:11 is not in the original text and is believed therefore not to be from the pen of Yochanan (John). Scholars agree that it is a true story about Yeshua (Jesus) written by one of his talmidim (disciples).-

  • Jesus forgives…
  • Jesus has authority…

Today’s Verse… Who is Jesus?  The forgiver of sin.

Yeshua (Jesus) said, “Neither do I condemn you. Now go, and don’t sin anymore.” John 7:11.

Today’s Challenge

Jesus could and did forgive sin – something only God can do.

Jesus also made forgiveness conditional – (ie to stop sinning!)

Where are you at in terms of repenting – in terms of stopping the sin which you are asking to be forgiven for?

  • Prayer and Praise.

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.

Prayer suggestions;-

  1. The world. (ie ‘For those in authority.’)
  2. The ‘suffering church.’ https://barnabasfund.org/nz/pray/daily-prayer/#previous-dates
  3. Your own situation. (Suggest ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’.)
