John 8:42-47 “Yeshua replied … I came out from God…”

Prayer and Praise

Jesus said, “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” Matthew 26:40, so we start our journey of giving God time to work in us, by praying along with this hymn;- Glorious things of Thee are spoken…

John 8:42-47 “Yeshua replied … I came out from God…”

(Acknowledgements to the “The Complete Jewish Bible”.)

42 Yeshua replied to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me; because I came out from God; and now I have arrived here. I did not come on my own; he sent me.

v. 42. The gospel is an offense. Jesus speaks more and more clearly as the appointed time for His sacrifice approaches. Unlike the other gospels, John gives most of His book over to Jesus’ teaching down south in and around Jerusalem. After all, that was where the prophets were killed, imprisoned, or persecuted in other ways by fellow Jews, from whom wrong teaching emanated. God sent His Son, Yeshua, (Jesus), to be the Messiah. Jesus came from God His Father in heaven, who sent Him.

43 Why don’t you understand what I’m saying? Because you can’t bear to listen to my message.

v.43 Who is Jesus talking to? V.13 shows this is a continuation of a conversation Jesus was having with the Pharisees. They can’t accept Jesus’ teaching! Why? Jesus explains that next…

44 You belong to your father, Satan, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. From the start, he was a murderer, and he has never stood by the truth because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he is speaking in character; because he is a liar — indeed, the inventor of the lie!

v.44 That is because their father is Satan, who is a murderer and whose language is one he invented – called “lying”.

45 But as for me, because I tell the truth you don’t believe me.

v.45 When presented with the truth, the southern religious leaders hated it, as it showed up their lies. The Jews following Jesus were mostly from the northern parts.

46 Which one of you can show me where I’m wrong? If I’m telling the truth, why don’t you believe me?

v.46 Jesus challenged them to speak up and explain exactly what was wrong with what Jesus said or did.

47 Whoever belongs to God listens to what God says; the reason you don’t listen is that you don’t belong to God.”

v.47 People who obey God belong to Him. The reason why so many religious leaders are not obedient is that they don’t belong to Him.

‘Who is Jesus?’ Jesus said ‘I came from God’ John 8: 42

  • Today’s Verse…

Who is Jesus? ‘Who is Jesus?’ Jesus said ‘I came from God’ John 8: 42

  • Today’s Challenge

When you read this, does it challenge you? Read again v. 44 where Jesus tells us that the father of the murderer is Satan. The Pope and his minions had huge numbers of ‘Born Again’ Christians burned alive – many of them after torture. Thousands of others were put to the sword in France, like the Huguenots. Anglican Bishops and Archbishops had many hundreds of those baptised by believer’s baptism, drowned, who justified it by calling them heretics, nicknaming them ‘anabaptists’. (Just as Bible translators were also treated.) Moving on from murder to lying, Popes justify their position on something called “The forged decretals”, even since they were proven to have been forged documents. The word “church” is a term used very loosely. How long are we going to continue justifying and supporting organizations founded on adultery, murder, and lies? (Especially as Jesus said the father of murderers is Satan, and that lying is the language created by Satan.) At the end of the day, whose side are we on? Foundations are critical, as they reveal what is of God. When Luther realized, he said, “Here I stand. I can do no other”.

Prayer and Worship

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.

Prayer suggestions;-

  1. The world. (ie ‘For those in authority.’)
  2. The ‘suffering church.’
  3. Your own situation. (Suggest ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’.)
