A WORD IN YOUR EAR

Luke 12:1-21 Loyalty and values…

Chapter 12:1-12 Jesus commands loyalty…

Meantime such a huge crowd had gathered that they were treading on each other’s toes. Then He started talking to His disciples again by saying,

“Beware of the Pharisees’ hypocrisy; it is like yeast which ferments the dough. 2Whatever is done in secret will be made known. 3Everything said at night will be heard about when it is day, and whatever is said in private will be public knowledge. 4My friends, I tell you this, don’t be afraid of those that can only kill the body and after that do nothing. 5But I will give you fair warning now who to fear! Fear Him who after death has the power to throw you into hell; yes, fear Him. 6Are not five sparrows sold for just two of the smallest coins? Well, not one of them is forgotten by God. 7As God even knows the number of the hairs of your head, do not worry as you are worth more than many sparrows. 8I will tell you this; whoever admits that they know Me before men, I will admit that I know them before the angels of God. 9But whoever denies that they know Me before men, I will deny that I know them before the angels of God. 10Whoever speaks against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 11When they bring you to the worship centre, to their judges, and those in power, don’t worry about how to answer their questions, or what to say to them, 12as the Holy Spirit will tell you what to say when the time comes”.

13-21 Our values must mean putting God first…

13Then one of the regular followers said to Him,

“Master, tell my brother to give me half of what our parents left behind when they died”.

14He replied,

“Man, when was I made a family courts judge?”

15Then He said to them,

“Look out for wanting more.  A man’s life is not about how much he can get.” 16Then He taught with an illustration,

“A rich farmer had a bumper crop one year. 17The farmer thought, ‘how can I keep such a big harvest. It’s too much for me to store’.

18So he thought to himself, ‘I know what to do. I will pull down my barns and build great big warehouses so that I can keep my harvest and possessions safely’. 19Then I will say to myself, ‘Soul, you are so rich now, that you can put your feet up and just live for yourself, eating, drinking and making yourself merry’.

20But God said to him, ‘You fool! Tonight, your time is up. I am taking your soul back, so who will own all the riches then, that you spent your life to get?’ 21This is what the man is like who lives to get rich for himself, but not towards God”.

—-Summary

20But God said to him, ‘You fool! Tonight, your time is up. I am taking your soul back, so who will own all the riches then, that you spent your life to get?’ 21This is what the man is like who lives to get rich for himself, but not towards God”.

  • Today’s Verse… Who is Jesus and the Holy Spirit?

10Whoever speaks against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

  • Today’s Challenge

5But I will give you fair warning now who to fear! Fear Him who after death has the power to throw you into hell; yes, fear Him.

8I will tell you this; whoever admits that they know Me before men, I will admit that I know them before the angels of God. 9But whoever denies that they know Me before men, I will deny that I know them before the angels of God.

Prayer, Praise and Worship

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.

Prayer suggestions;-

  1. The world. (ie ‘For those in authority.’)
  2. The ‘suffering church.’ https://barnabasfund.org/nz/pray/daily-prayer/#previous-dates
  3. Your own situation. (Suggest ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’.)

Pray along with this hymn… O Jesus I have promised…
