A WORD IN YOUR EAR

Luke 12:22-46 Trust God and be ready

Luke 12:22-34 Trust God

22Then He said to His disciples,

“Don’t think about what you will eat or either what you or your clothes look like. 23This life is about more than food and the body is more than looking good. 24Think about how God has provided for the birds. They don’t sow seeds or harvest, or store grain, but God provides food for them. How much more valuable do you think you are than the birds. 25Who can make himself taller by wishing it? 26If you can’t even make the easiest thing happen by wishing it, why do you worry about anything else? 27Just think about these lilies. They don’t do any work but even Solomon in all his king’s clothes didn’t come close to looking as beautiful as they do. 28If God makes the grass look so beautiful today, which is just going to be burned up tomorrow, don’t you think He will give you the clothes you need? Oh you people who have no faith! 29Do not look for food or drink or even worry about it. 30That’s what the world does. Don’t you think that your Father already knows that you need these things? 31Instead, search first for the Kingdom of God, and the things I mentioned will be given to you. 32Don’t worry, my few followers. It is My Father’s pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33Sell what you have, give to the poor.  Get for yourselves property and riches that do not wear out and where there are no thieves to steal anything from you and where there are no moths to eat it. 34You will put your money where your heart is.

Luke 12:35-46 Be ready

35Keep yourself ready, day and night, 36like men who wait for their lord to return back from his wedding, so that when he knocks at the door, it will be opened immediately. 37Blessed are the servants who their lord finds watching. I tell you that their lord will make them sit down to eat and he will come out and serve them. 38Yes, blessed are the servants if he comes in the middle of the night and he still finds them faithfully watching out for him. 39Think of it this way… If the house-owner knew in advance what time the thief was coming, he would be ready for him to stop him breaking into his house. 40Be ready for the Son of man too, as He will come just when you don’t expect Him”.

41Then Peter said,

“Lord, are you talking to us, or to everybody?”

42So the Lord said,

“Who is this faithful and wise servant who their lord will put in control of his property, and who will then be given his reward?

43It is the servant who is found doing just what he should have been doing who is going to be so pleased that he was doing it, 44because he will be made ruler over everything his lord has.

45Now suppose the servant was unfaithful instead and beat those under him and spent his time eating, drinking and getting drunk, 46then that servant will not be ready when his lord comes back, because it will happen at a time that catches him by surprise, and his lord will kill him and give him what the unbelievers will get. 47That servant, which knew what his lord wanted, did not get himself ready or do what he was supposed to do and so he will be punished severely. 48Anyone who did things that deserved punishment, but had not been told it was wrong, will only be punished lightly. This is because whoever has a lot, will be expected to give a lot, just as when men give a lot to someone, they will ask a lot from him”.

Prayer, Praise and Worship

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.

Prayer suggestions;-

  1. The world. (ie ‘For those in authority.’)
  2. The ‘suffering church.’ https://barnabasfund.org/nz/pray/daily-prayer/#previous-dates
  3. Your own situation. (Suggest ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’.)

Pray along with this hymn… In Christ Alone…
