LUKE 1:57-80  John is born

57Then Elizabeth’s time to have her baby came; and she gave birth to a son,58and her neighbours and her cousins all heard how the Lord had shown her great mercy; and they shared in her happiness.

59Then the time came to circumcise the child on the eighth day; and those present automatically called him Zacharias, after his father. 60But his mother said,

“No, he will be called John”.

61So they said to her,

“But you don’t have anyone in your family with that name.”

62And so they used signs to ask the father what name he had chosen. 63He asked for a writing table, and wrote,

‘His name is John’,

at which they were all very surprised. 64And immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue became free, and he was able to speak again, and he spoke praising God. 65And the people in that area became afraid, and news of what had happened spread to everyone in the hill country of Judea. 66Everyone who heard about this asked,

“What will this child become?”

and the Lord was with him. 67Then his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied saying,

68“Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for He has visited us and saved His people, 69and has delivered one who can save us, from the family tree of His servant King David; 70just as He told us He would, using the mouth of His holy prophets, since the world began; 71that we would be saved from our enemies, and from everyone who hates us, 72to show us the mercy that He had promised to our fathers, and to remember His holy covenant; 73the binding promise that He had made with Abraham, 74that He would deliver us from our enemies so that we could serve Him without fear, 75and live before Him in a holy and right way, all our days. 76As for this child here, you will be called the prophet of God, because you will prepare the way for the coming Lord; 77so that the people will be saved through the taking away of their sins, 78because of the tender mercy of our God. Our hope from above has now come, 79to give light to those sitting in the darkness that leads to death, and to guide us into the way of peace”.

80And the child grew, and had a strong spirit, and lived in the desert until it was the right time for him to go before the people of Israel.

—-Summary

• Today’s Challenge

Obedience resulted in John’s father, Zacharias, being healed from the dumbness God had punished him with, for his unbelief whilst serving as High Priest in the Holy of Holies.

62And so they used signs to ask the father what name he had chosen. 63He asked for a writing table, and wrote,

‘His name is John’,

at which they were all very surprised. 64And immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue became free, and he was able to speak again, and he spoke praising God.

Obedience and faith are fundamental if serving God. Does the lesson Zacharias learned, speak to you?

Prayer, Praise and Worship

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.
