A WORD IN YOUR EAR

Chapter 20:1-8 Jesus is challenged…

One day as He was teaching the people in the temple and bringing the message that heals, the religious leaders came to Him 2saying at Him,

“What authority do you have to do these things? Who gave you this authority?”

3He answered

“Well, let me ask you something. Answer me this… 4Was the water immersion of John from heaven or men?”

5They discussed it by saying,

“If we say ‘From heaven’, He will say, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’. 6However, if we say ‘From men’, the people will stone us, as they believe that John was a prophet”. 7They answered, “We don’t know”.

8Jesus said to them,

“Then I too will not tell you by what authority I do these things”.

Luke 20:9-19 Vineyard tenants

9He turned towards the people and taught them with this meaningful story.

“A man planted a vineyard, and let it out to a farmer of vines, and then went far away to another country for a long time. 10The time came to get the rent and he sent a servant to the tenant farmer, to receive the fruit of the vines. Instead, the farmer beat him up and sent him away with nothing. 11So, he sent another servant and he was beaten up too and treated in a way that was shameful. 12So he sent a third one and again they beat him up and threw him out. 13Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What can I do? I will send my son that I love. Maybe they will respect him’. 14But when the tenant saw him, they said this to themselves; ‘This is the heir. Come on, let’s kill him and then we will have his inheritance’. 15So they threw him out and killed him. What will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16He will come and destroy the tenant farmers and give the vineyard to others”.

Those who heard him say this, said,

“No! May this never happen”.

17He looked at them and said,

“What does it mean then when it says, ‘The stone which the builders rejected has become the foundation stone’. 18Whoever falls on that stone, will be shattered. Whoever the stone falls on will be crushed”.

19Then the religious leaders wanted to lay their hands on Him as they saw that the story was about them, but couldn’t find any way of doing it as they were afraid of the people.

  • Today’s Verse… Who is Jesus?

13Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What can I do? I will send my son that I love. Maybe they will respect him’. 14But when the tenant saw him, they said this to themselves; ‘This is the heir. Come on, let’s kill him and then we will have his inheritance’. 15So they threw him out and killed him. What will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16He will come and destroy the tenant farmers and give the vineyard to others”.

Prayer, Praise and Worship

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.

Prayer suggestions;-

  1. The world. (ie ‘For those in authority.’)
  2. The ‘suffering church.’ https://barnabasfund.org/nz/pray/daily-prayer/#previous-dates
  3. Your own situation. (Suggest ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’.)

Pray along with this hymn… Breathe on me breath of God…
