A WORD IN YOUR EAR

Luke 20:20-44 Spies, tricks and traps…

20So, they watched Him, using spies pretending to be of the common people, looking for something He said, to be used as the evidence they needed to have Him arrested by the governor. 21These spies said,

“Teacher, we know that you speak and teach correctly. You don’t take anything at face value but only teach God’s true way. 22So should we, or should we not be paying taxes to Caesar?”

23But He saw their trick question, and said to them,

24“Find me a coin…Now whose face is on it?”

They replied, “Caesar’s”.

25And His reply to them was,

“Then give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and give to God what belongs to God”.

26In public they couldn’t find any of His words that they could use against Him. They were amazed at His answer and had nothing they could say. 27Then those religious leaders who deny that there is such a thing as a resurrection, asked Him a question. 28They said,

“Teacher, Moses wrote down that if a man’s married brother dies without children, then the brother marry her and give her children. 29There were seven brothers. The first married and died without children. 30The second married her and died without children. 31The third married her and so on, up to the seventh, all dying without children. 32Finally, the woman died. 33So, as she was wife to all seven brothers, whose wife will she be in the next life?”

34And Jesus answered them,

“The children of this world marry and are given away to get married, 35but the ones considered to be worthy to have the resurrection from the dead, do not marry or are given to be married. 36And they cannot die again either, as they are equal to the angel messengers, and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. 37The dead are raised now, for example Moses who presented himself at the bush and called on the Lord, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. 38For He is not a God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to Him”.

39The religious writers said,

“Ideal answer, Teacher”.

40And after that, they didn’t dare ask Him any more questions.

41Then He said to them,

“How come some say, that Christ is David’s son? 42David himself said in the Psalms, ‘The LORD said to my Lord, ‘Sit at my right hand, 43until I put your enemies under your feet’. 44As David therefore called Him, ‘Lord’, how can He be his son?”

Prayer, Praise and Worship

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.

Prayer suggestions;-

  1. The world. (ie ‘For those in authority.’)
  2. The ‘suffering church.’ https://barnabasfund.org/nz/pray/daily-prayer/#previous-dates
  3. Your own situation. (Suggest ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’.)

Pray along with this hymn…I will sing the wondrous story…
