A WORD IN YOUR EAR

 Jesus’ suffering before men…

Luke 22:63-65 The soldiers beat Jesus

63The people that were holding Jesus laughed at Him, and with their whips they took His skin off. 64After they blind-folded Him, they hit Him in the face, saying,

“As a prophet, tell us who hit You”,

65and they said many things about Him that were blasphemous.

Luke 22:66-71 The Jewish leaders

66At dawn, the religious leaders took Him for questioning, asking,

67“Are You the Christ? Tell us”.

And He answered,

“You wouldn’t believe Me if I told you! 68If I asked you a question, you wouldn’t give Me an answer. You’re not going to let me go anyway. 69After this, the Son of man will sit as of right, with the power of God”.

70They all said at the same time,

“Are You then the Son of God?”

And He replied,

“As you say.”

71They said,

“What need is there of any more witnesses? We ourselves have heard Him speak”.

Chapter 23:1-25 The Jewish leaders, Pilate & Herod

And then they all got up and took Him to Pilate, 2and started saying things against Him like,

“We found this one turning people against the nation and telling them not to pay taxes to Caesar, saying that He Himself is the Christ, the anointed king to be”.

3So Pilate asked Him,

“Are You the King of the Jews?”

He answered,

“You said it”.

4Then Pilate said to the chief priests,

“This man has done nothing wrong”.

5This made them speak more strongly, saying,

“He makes people excited, teaching all through Judea, from Galilee where He started, all the way here”.

6When they mentioned Galilee, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean. 7As soon as he knew that He belonged to the area under Herod’s rule, he sent Him to Herod, who was in Jerusalem then. 8When Herod saw Jesus, he got excited as he had been wanting to see Jesus for a long time. He had heard about the things He had done and wanted to watch Him do some miracles. 9He used many words to ask Him questions, but He did not speak one word in reply.

10The religious leaders and writers used strong words to condemn Him, 11choosing words to try to make Him look silly. So, then Herod and His soldiers didn’t know what to do, and so they made fun of Him too and put a royal-looking coat on Him, and sent Him back to Pilate. 12That day Pilate and Herod became friends. Before that they were enemies. 13Pilate then called together the chief priests and rulers of the people, 14and said,

“You brought Him to me as if He was a trouble maker. I looked at Him myself in front of you and found He had not done what you said. 15When I sent you to Herod, he too found He had done nothing that He should die for. 16So, I will discipline Him and let Him go”.

17(He was supposed to release someone at the feast). 18This made them all shout out at the same time,

“Get rid of this man and give us Barabbas”.

19(Who was being held in prison for things he had done against the government and murder.) 20Pilate wanted to let Jesus go and so spoke to them again. 21This made them cry out,

“Crucify Him, Crucify Him”.

22And he said a third time,

“Why? What evil has He done? I do not find any reason to kill Him, so I will beat Him and let Him go”.

23They shouted out demanding that He be crucified. And so they got their own way 24and Pilate ordered that their demands be met. 25He let the man go free who was being held in the guard house for trying to get people to fight against the government, and for murder, but Pilot gave Jesus up to them, by ordering the sentence which they demanded.

  • Today’s Verse… Who is Jesus?

Luke 22:67-69 “You wouldn’t believe Me if I told you! 68If I asked you a question, you wouldn’t give Me an answer. You’re not going to let me go anyway. 69After this, the Son of man will sit as of right, with the power of God”.

  • Today’s Challenge

Jesus’ disciples ran away.

The Jewish leaders set Jesus up for execution.

Herod & Pilate washed their hands of doing what they knew was right.

Both Jews and Gentiles became guilty of Jesus’ tortuous execution.

That covered everybody.

Do any of those boxes apply today with us?

Prayer, Praise and Worship

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.

Prayer suggestions;-

  1. The world. (ie ‘For those in authority.’)
  2. The ‘suffering church.’ https://barnabasfund.org/nz/pray/daily-prayer/#previous-dates
  3. Your own situation. (Suggest ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’.)
