A WORD IN YOUR EAR

Luke 23:26-56 Jesus’ Crucifixion, death & burial

Luke 23:26-43 Jesus Crucifixion.

26As they took Him away, they forced Simon from Cyrene, coming in from the fields, to carry the cross behind Jesus. 27Behind them was a great crowd of people, especially women, who were striking themselves in anguish and crying out with funeral cries and funeral music. 28Jesus turned to them and said,

“Don’t cry for me, daughters of Jerusalem, but for yourselves and your children. 29The days are coming when it will be said, ‘Happy are the women unable to have children and have never breastfed, 30as people will be calling on the mountains, saying, ‘Fall on us’, and to the hills, ‘Cover us’. 31If they do things like this when the tree is alive, what will they do when the tree is withered”.

32Two criminals were also being taken out to be lifted up to die together with Him. 33When they came to the place called “Skull”, they crucified Him with the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. 34Then Jesus said,

“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing”.

They divided His clothes and gambled for them. 35The people stood by and watched along with the religious leaders who made fun of Him saying,

“He saved others. Let Him save Himself – if He really is the Christ, the chosen one of God”.

36Just to have fun, the soldiers also teased Him by offering Him vinegar, as a drink, 37saying,

“If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself”.

38It was written over Him, in Greek, Latin and Hebrew, “THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS”. 39One of the criminals hanged with Jesus also blasphemed with these words,

“Are you not the anointed one? Save yourself –   and us”.

40So then the other one told him off saying,

“Don’t you fear God who you are in the same judgement with? 41We got what we deserved and this man has done nothing wrong? 42And he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come into your Kingdom”.

43Jesus said,

“I tell you that today you will be with me in the paradise park”.

Luke 23:44-46 Jesus’ death.

44It was about midday and it became as dark as night until three o’clock in the afternoon, 45as the sun was blocked out. Then the temple curtain was split down the middle. 46After Jesus cried out with a loud voice He said,

“Father, into your hands I commit my spirit”,

and just as He had said this, He died.

47-56 A soldier sees who Jesus is

47When the soldier in charge of a hundred men, saw what had happened, He gave glory to God and said,

“This really was an innocent man”.

48 The crowds also hated what happened

48The crowds that saw all the things that had happened went home beating their chests.

Luke 23:49-56 The followers of Jesus bury Him

49Those that knew of Jesus and the women who had followed Him from Galilee, all watched what had happened at a distance. 50There was a good and just man on the council named Joseph, 51who had not consented to the deeds of the council. He was from the Jewish city of Arimathea, and was waiting for the Kingdom of God. 52Well, he went to Pilate and begged for the body of Jesus. 53He then went and took it down and wrapped it in linen, and put it in a tomb cut into rock, where no-one had been put yet. 54As it was nearly the Sabbath holy day, they were preparing for it. 55The women which had followed Him all the way from Galilee, kept on following the body and saw the tomb where the body was laid. 56Then they went back and made ready the spices and oils, which were prepared for the dead, and then rested from sunset, as it was the Sabbath holy day, as they were commanded to do.

Prayer, Praise and Worship

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.

Prayer suggestions;-

  1. The world. (ie ‘For those in authority.’)
  2. The ‘suffering church.’ https://barnabasfund.org/nz/pray/daily-prayer/#previous-dates
  3. Your own situation. (Suggest ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’.)

Pray along with this hymn… There is a Green Hill Far Away
