Chapter 4.

1-14 Satan tempts Jesus in the desert

*a=Deut.8:3; *b=Deut.6:13; *c=Ps.91:11-12; *d=Is.61:1-2

Jesus, being full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordon and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 where He was tempted by the devil for forty days, while fasting, and at the end of His fast He was really hungry. 3It was then that the devil said to Him,

“If you really are the Son of God, then turn this stone into bread”.

4Jesus answered back,

“The scriptures say that man does not live on bread alone”. *a

5 So, the devil took Him up a high mountain, to show the world to Him in a flash, 6saying;

“I will give you all the power and the glory that comes by owning all of it, which was given to me anyway and so is mine to give to you, 7if you worship me. Then you can have it all.”

8Jesus answered,

“Get behind me Satan. It is written that you must worship the Lord your God, and serve only Him”.*b

9Next, he set Jesus on the top of the temple, and said;

“If you really are God’s Son, then jump off the top from here, 10for it is written, ‘He will send His angels to protect you’, 11and so that means that they will have to catch you, so you don’t even hurt your foot on a stone”.

12In return, Jesus said,

“As it is written, ‘You will not tempt the Lord your God’.”*c

13So the devil went away for a time after he had tempted all he could.

14And then Jesus went back to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, from where He became really famous, throughout that whole area.

—Summary

Part one…

3:23-38 Luke shows MARY’S family tree, which proves that legally, Jesus was “The Son of David” and therefore the RIGHTFUL heir to the throne of Israel – as King Jesus! (ie not Herod!). (Matthew showed Jesus’ family tree on Joseph’s side).

Part two…

4:13 So the devil went away for a time after he had tempted all he could.

  • Today’s Verse…

13So the devil went away for a time after he had tempted all he could.

  • Today’s Challenge

Three times Satan tempted Jesus using the word “IF”…

Three times Jesus answered by quoting Scripture…

Do you read the Bible so that you have Scriptures come to mind when you need to use them?

Prayer suggestions;-

  1. The world. (ie ‘For those in authority.’)
  2. The ‘suffering church.’ https://barnabasfund.org/nz/pray/daily-prayer/#previous-dates
  3. Your own situation. (Suggest ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’.)

Prayer, Praise and Worship

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.
