Luke 4:14-44 Jesus’ ministry begins by healing…

15From there He taught in their worship centres, and everyone gave Him glory. 16He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up, and went to the worship centre on the ‘Day of Rest’ and stood up to read. 17The reading He was given was from the prophet Isaiah as the reading for the day, and He opened the book at the place where this was written;

18“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because He has anointed me to give good news to the poor; He has sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to tell prisoners how to become free, to give the blind their sight back, and to tell those that are hurting how they can be free from their pain, 19to tell them that this is the time God has given to help them”.*d

20He closed the book, and gave it back to the teacher, and sat down. Then everyone looked at Him to give them some teaching. 21Then He said,

“Today what was said would happen, has happened, right in front of you, as you were listening”.

22And they were witnesses of this, and were amazed at the gracious words He spoke, because they said,

“But isn’t this Joseph’s son?”

23And He said to them,

“I know that you want to quote this saying at me, ‘Doctor, heal yourself!’ So, do what we have heard that you have done in Capernaum, right here in your own home town”.

24So, He said to them,

“But I can’t do anything here, as no prophet has ever been accepted in the area where they have come from. 25Even Elijah couldn’t do anything in Israel, when it didn’t rain for three and a half years and there was very little food in the whole land. Although there were many widows, 26He was only sent to the widow Sarepta, in Sidon. 27There were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elijah the prophet, but none of them were healed, except Naaman who was from Syria”.

28Well, when they heard these things, they were so angry, 29that they grabbed Him, pushed Him out of the city, and took Him up the hillside, (which the city was built on), in order to throw Him off the top. 30However, He just simply passed through them and went on His way.

31-37 Jesus heals…

31From there He went to Capernaum by Galilee and taught them instead on the Sabbaths. 32They were so amazed at His teaching as His words had power. 33There was a demon-possessed man in their worship centre, who cried out loud,34saying,

“Leave us alone! What have You got to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know that you are the Holy One of God.”

35Jesus told him off and said,

“Be quiet and come out of him”.

So the demon threw the man first, and then came out of him without hurting him. 36They were all amazed, and said,

“Who can speak with such authority and power that demons obey His orders to come out”.

37This made Him even more famous throughout the whole area.

38-41 Peter’s mother-in-law healed.

38Then, after leaving the worship centre, Jesus went back to Simon’s house, who had a very sick mother-in-law, and they asked Him to heal her. 39He just stood over her and with a word He made her well. Immediately, she simply got out of bed and gave them a meal. 40As soon as the sun had gone down on the Holy Day, the people couldn’t wait any longer and brought Him all the sick people that they could lay their hands on, so that they could watch Him lay His healing hands on them. 41Demon possessed men were freed of devils which then shouted at Him, for all to hear,

“You are the Christ, the Son of God”. So they were forced to be silent so that they would not tell everyone what they knew about Him being Christ.

42-44 The common people loved Him…

42As soon as daylight came, He went to be alone in the desert, while He could, but when the people realised that they had lost Him, they went looking for Him until they found Him. He was so popular that this time they stuck to Him like glue, as people didn’t want to let Him out of their sight so that they didn’t lose Him again.

43But Jesus had to say to them,

“I have to go and tell other cities too about the Kingdom of God. That is why I came”.

44Then, He preached in all the worship centres around Galilee.

Prayer, Praise and Worship

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.

Pray along with this hymn… I am The God that healeth thee…
