Luke 8: 19-39 More miracles of Jesus

–Luke 8: 19-21 Jesus distances Himself from His earthly step-family…

19One day His mother and brother visited Him but couldn’t even get near Him, due to the crowd. 20So, they passed a message to Him saying,

“Your mother and brother are outside and want to see you.”

21He replied,

“But my mother and brother are those who obey the Word of God.”

—Luke 8: 22-25 Calming a storm…

22Anyway, a bit later on He got into a boat with His disciples and said

“Let’s go to the other side of the lake”,

so they set off. 23On the way, He just fell fast asleep. A storm blew up, filling the boat with water and they were afraid for their lives. 24They went over to Him, woke Him up and said,

“Master, Master, we’re dying.”

25He got up, told the storm to stop, and the raging water to be calm and it simply did just that!

He then asked the disciples,

“Where is your faith?”

So they became afraid of Him, and asked,

“What kind of man is He? Even the wind and water obey Him!”

— Luke8: 26-39 A possessed man is cleaned of demons…

26 They arrived at the other side of Galilee in the area around the Gadarenes. 27As He went to get out of the boat, a demon-possessed naked man met Him, who lived with the bodies that were dead and buried. 28At this, the man fell before Jesus and shouted out,

“What have I to do with you, Jesus, the Son of God? Please don’t do anything to upset me”.

29This was because He had told the evil spirit to come out of the man. The man was kept in chains, but the spirit had made the man break the chains and forced him into the desert. 30Jesus asked the spirit,

“What is your name?”

It replied,

This was because many devils had entered him. 31They begged Him not to send them to the depths of the spiritual prison, 32and as pigs were eating on the mountain they begged Him to let them enter into the pigs. Jesus let them. 33So the devils went into all the many pigs, who went mad and ran madly downhill into the lake and drowned. 34Those who fed them were so afraid that they ran away and told everyone they met in and out of the town what had happened.

35So people came out to see what had happened for themselves. What they found was the man who had been demon-possessed, sitting at Jesus feet, with his clothes on, and normal in every way. This made them afraid. 36Those who saw the miracle told those who were just arriving how the demon-possessed man was healed. 37So, at this the people from the Gadarenes begged Him to go away, as they were so afraid. So Jesus got back into the boat and left, 38but this was not before the healed man had begged Jesus to take him with Him. Instead, Jesus sent him back saying,

39“Go back home now and show everyone what God has done for you”.

So he went away and told everyone in the city how much God had done for him.

39“… show everyone what God has done for you”.

Prayer, Praise and Worship

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.

Prayer suggestions;-

  1. The world. (ie ‘For those in authority.’)
  2. The ‘suffering church.’
  3. Your own situation. (Suggest ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’.)

Pray along with this hymn… These are the days of Elijah…
