A WORD IN YOUR EAR

Luke 9:37-62  It’s all about the heart…

Luke 9: 37-43 Epileptic healed

37The next day they came down the hill to find a crowd of people waiting for Him. 38A man from the crowd cried out,

“Please help me, Master. Take a look at my son, who is my only child. 39A demon has possessed him, making him shout, cut himself, foam at the mouth, and bruise himself. It almost never stops. 40I asked your disciples to get rid of the demon but they couldn’t“.

41Jesus said;

“You have no faith and do not follow God. How much longer do I have to put up with you? Bring your son to me”.

42As Jesus came near the son, the devil threw the child to the ground and hurt him. Jesus told the demon to go away and cleaned the child of the evil spirit and gave the healed child back to his father. 43Everyone was amazed that God could do such a thing!

Luke 9: 43-48 Jesus teaches His disciples

But while they spent their time talking about it, Jesus said to His disciples,

44“Remember carefully what I am telling you now, the Son of Man will be taken and handed over to men”.

45But they didn’t know what He was talking about, because it didn’t make sense to them and were afraid to ask Him.

46After this, the disciples started to argue about who was the greatest.

47Jesus knew the thoughts of their hearts and took a child and placed him next to Himself, 48and said,

“If you receive this child, you receive Me. If you receive Me, then you receive Him that sent Me. The most humble servant is the one who will be great.”

Luke 9: 49-61 The disciple’s hearts.

49John said,

“Master, we saw someone else also healing someone of devils in your name, so we told them to stop, because he wasn’t one of us.”

50Jesus said;

“No, don’t order them to stop. Anyone who is not against us is for us”.

51When it was time for Him to die, He started going to Jerusalem. 52He sent messengers ahead, who arrived in a village of Samaria, where the people would not receive Him. 53They refused to give Him recognition as He was going to Jerusalem. 54When James and John saw this, they said,

“Lord, can we bring down fire from heaven and burn them up, like Elijah did?”

55This made Him turn round, sharply criticising them, saying,

“You don’t know the kind of spirit that has you. 56The Son of Man has not come to destroy anyone, but to save”.

So they moved on towards the next village. 57On the way, they met a man who said to Him,

“Lord, I will follow you anywhere”.

58 Jesus replied,

“Foxes have holes to live in, and birds of the air have nests to live in, but the Son of Man doesn’t even have a place to sleep”.

59To another man, He said,

“Follow me”.

The man said,

“Lord, first wait until my father has died, so that I can take care of my funeral responsibilities.”

60Jesus replied,

“Let those without life, bury the dead, but as for you, spend your time telling others about the Kingdom of God”.

61Another man said,

“Lord, I will follow you, if you wait for me to go and say goodbye to the family at home.”

62Jesus said,

“You are not fit for the Kingdom of Heaven if you still want to keep your past life, after you have started following Me.”

Prayer, Praise and Worship

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.

Prayer suggestions;-

  1. The world. (ie ‘For those in authority.’)
  2. The ‘suffering church.’ https://barnabasfund.org/nz/pray/daily-prayer/#previous-dates
  3. Your own situation. (Suggest ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’.)

Jesus said, “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” Matthew 26:40.
