The birth of Jesus: Chapter 2:1-20

LUKE 2:1-20

It happened then that an order went out from Emperor Caesar Augustus, to start taxing everybody. 2(This taxation began when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 3Everyone had to first return to where they originally came from, and then to pay the tax from there. 4For this reason Joseph went from Nazareth in Galilee, (a city of Judah), to Bethlehem, (a city of David, as he had come from King David’s family tree). 5He was to be taxed along with his wife Mary, who was very pregnant. 6It was while they were here that the time came for her to have her baby, 7and she gave birth to her firstborn son, wrapped him up, and put him in an animal feeding box because the inn was full.

8In the same country there were shepherds, living out in the fields, keeping an eye out for the sheep at night. 9Suddenly, one of the Lord’s angels appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord made it so bright that they were shaking with fear.

10So the angel said,

“Don’t worry. Something amazing has happened. I’ve come to bring you the best news you will ever hear, and it’s for absolutely everybody. 11Today a baby was born in the city of David, who is Christ the Lord. 12You can see for yourselves by finding the baby wrapped up warmly in an animal feeding box”.

13Suddenly a great population from heaven appeared who burst out praising God, saying,

14“Glory to God in the highest, who has brought peace and goodwill towards men.”

15After the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other

“Let’s go and see what the Lord just told us about”.

16They rushed off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby who was in the animal feeding box. 17Then they shared with everybody what they had been told about this child. 18When others heard, they too started to think about what they had been told, 19but Mary kept all her thoughts to herself, thinking about them deeply. 20Then the shepherds went back, giving God all the credit, glory and praise for what they had heard and seen, as it was all just as they had been told that God had done.

  • Today’s Challenge

The Son of God was born in -4BC to Mary as “The Son of Man” at the time of the Feast of Tabernacles. We know that for two reasons… One was the date of the Roman census that drove Joseph to go home to Bethlehem in -4BC and secondly because of the dates when Zacharias was on duty in the Temple as High Priest.

In 2022, the Feast of Tabernacles – Sukkot – is held September 20-27 – (ie about now – and not on December 25th, which was yet another error in the catalogue of Catholic errors.) If what you were taught growing up was completely wrong, would learning the truth make any difference? Or is “saving face” more important to you than the truth?

Prayer, Praise, and Worship

“… He went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23.

Jesus taught His disciples what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer’; (Luke 11).

Listen here to Albert Malotte’s ‘The Lord’s Prayer’.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever;- Amen.

Prayer suggestions;-

  1. The world. (ie ‘For those in authority.’)
  2. The ‘suffering church.’ https://barnabasfund.org/nz/pray/daily-prayer/#previous-dates
  3. Your own situation. (Suggest ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’.)
